News and Views: The Most Valuable Player in Baseball

News: Troy Tulowitzki hit his sixth and seventh home runs of the season as the Colorado Rockies swept a doubleheader and the four-game series from the New York Mets on Thursday. He was a combined 5-for-8 on the day. The 26-year-old shortstop leads Major League Baseball in HR (7), XBH (10), TB (40), RC (19), SLG (.909), and OPS (1.400).

Views: Move over Albert Pujols, Tulowitzki is now the best player in the game. The seventh overall draft pick out of Long Beach State in 2005 is nearly five years younger than the three-time National League MVP, plays a much more important defensive position (and as well as any shortstop in baseball), and, get this, has actually outhit him over the past 365 days. That's right, Tulo has a higher AVG (.324 to .300), SLG (.614 to .560), OPS (1.011 to .961), wOBA (.431 to .401), and wRC+ (161 to 153) than Pujols during this period. Moreover, the player who is now just approaching his prime has generated 7.7 Wins Above Replacement (fWAR) vs. 6.5 for his 31-year-old counterpart.

You can have Pujols or, for that matter, Hanley Ramirez if you're into shortstops. I'll take Tulowitzki.

Tigers left-hander Phil Coke is moving back to the bullpen after struggling in his first half-season as a regular starter. Coke is 1-8 with a 4.91 ERA after allowing seven earned runs in four-plus innings against the New York Mets on Wednesday night. Left-handed rookie Charlie Furbush will move from the bullpen to the rotation.

Ryan Dempster wanted to stay in the game. He had only thrown 83 pitches, given up three hits, was ahead 1-0 in the ninth inning and had retired 20 straight hitters at one point. News and Views: New York Yankees Starting Rotation

The New York Yankees reportedly signed Kevin Millwood to a minor league deal on Friday. The 36-year-old righthander will compete with the 37-year-old Bartolo Colon and the 34-year-old Freddy Garcia for the fifth spot in the team's starting rotation. And let's not forget Mark Prior who hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2006!

These candidates would make for a nice staff if this were 2003 rather than 2011. I mean, this foursome might even give the Philadelphia Phillies' quartet a run for their money. You see, eight years ago, Colon, Garcia, Millwood, and Prior combined to post a 59-45 record with a 3.71 ERA and 733 SO/256 BB in 876.2 IP when all four starters were in their 20s.

Hey, if it's not 2003, then maybe it is the 1960s as we shouldn't forget that the club is also counting on a first-generation Nova.

Wrapping up the Hall of Fame Classic

For fans in the Northeast who have been drenched by the spring rains, the weather turned ideal for last Sunday?s Hall of Fame Classic. A perfect day included sunny skies, 75-degree temperatures and low humidity. Along with organ music filling Doubleday field instead of blaring pop selections, and old-time players who actually wanted to be in town as opposed to cranky major leaguers, all was right for the third edition of the Classic.

It?s just a shame that a crowd of only 5,687 fans came out to watch in a historical ballpark that seats close to 10,000. The first two editions of the Classic each drew crowds of over 7,000, leading to speculation as to why this year?s attendance mark fell off so significantly.

There seem to be two prevailing theories for the drop. It might be the relatively small number of ex-Yankees, the team that is followed most rabidly in Otsego County (followed by the Red Sox and the Mets). According to the other theory, it might be time to consider holding the game later in the year than Father?s Day, which has been the traditional day for the Classic.

For example, if the Classic were held two weeks later, when all of New York?s public schools are out of session, the game might draw a more substantial crowd. It?s worth some consideration.

I tend to think the former factor is a more pertinent reason for the falloff in fans. This year?s Classic featured only three ex-Yankees, only one of whom is truly remembered for his association with the franchise (Hall of Famer Goose Gossage). If the MLB Alumni Association could bring in a longer list of Yankees, or better yet, reel in a prominent Yankee from the recent past, then the Classic would see a major jump in attendance.

Former stars like Paul O?Neill, Bernie Williams, and Andy Pettitte, all critical parts of the franchise?s most recent dynasty, would be a huge boost to the game. Putting any one of those three on the marquee would easily add one or two thousand more fans through the turnstiles.

Issues of attendance aside, the actual atmosphere, organization, and format of the Hall of Fame Classic are structurally solid. The retired ballplayers are glad to be invited to Cooperstown, receptive to appreciative fans, and willing to talk and sign autographs until fatigue sets in.

The Hall of Fame staff also works hard to execute a batting contest and numerous between-inning promotions geared toward children. Given all of these extra amenities, the price of admission is incredibly reasonable at $11 to $12.50 per ticket. Fans can get their money?s worth with just one autograph, not to mention all of the extra entertainment they receive during a three-hour outing at the ballpark.

In regards to this year?s Classic, the game produced its usual share of memorable moments, including an inordinate number of episodes that could best be described as bizarre. Here?s a recap of what went down as ?Niekro?s Knucksies? defeated ?Ozzie?s Wizards,? 8-6.

*Former slugger Dmitri Young, who looked like he had lost 20 pounds from his late-career playing weight, won the pre-game batting challenge with a late power surge, overtaking the usually slim and trim Reggie Sanders. Young then claimed the Player of the Game Award by clubbing a long three-run homer against one of Bill ?Spacemen? Lee?s patented slow balls.

Young, an avid card collector who is interested in the game?s history, seemed genuinely thrilled to receive the Player of the Game honor that has been named for the late Bob Feller.

*Speaking of the unpredictable Lee, he actually went behind the plate for a half-inning. I?ve always suspected Lee of borderline insanity, but now I?m convinced. Sporting a 19th-century replica uniform, Lee caught pitches without a chest protector, shin guards, or a regulation catcher?s mitt. Wearing only a face mask and a pair of fingerless gloves for protections against foul tips, he somehow escaped the inning. Yes, the Spaceman lives.

*The ageless Phil Niekro, 72 years of age but still nimble around the mound, made a nifty snare of Ozzie Smith?s sharp comebacker, fielding the ball cleanly on a tough, in-between hop. And some 25 years after he last pitched in a major league game, Niekro can still throw the knuckleball for strikes. He did have one bit of wildness, as he nailed his former Yankee teammate, Billy Sample, with an inside fastball.

*For some reason, Niekro?s former teammate, Dale Murphy, played the game with his Braves shirt completely untucked. He looked odd, sort of like Jerry Seinfeld did when he sported a fur coat and a European carryall for an episode of my favorite sitcom.

*Baseball?s new clowned prince, the delightful ex-Tiger Jon Warden, sported a rainbow wig and a scream mask at various times throughout the day. Also, he squirted Dave Henderson with soapy water while Hendu was in the midst of one of his at-bats. Warden is the closest thing we have to Max Patkin in today?s game.

*Dick Williams, looking sharp wearing the ?California Gold? jersey worn by the A?s during the Charlie Finley era, made his presence felt. Williams made several pitching changes, walking slowly—and I mean ever soooo slowly—from the dugout to the mound each time. It reminded me of the 1972 World Series, when Williams set an unofficial record for most visits to the mound during a Fall Classic.

*In the most poignant moment of the day, Bob Feller?s widow, Anne, delivered the game ball to the mound just prior to the first pitch. Feller, who passed away in December at the age of 92, participated in the first two editions of the Classic.

From a selfish standpoint, this year?s Classic was satisfying to me, in large part because of the opportunity to interview a number of former big leaguers, including Williams, Warden, Sample, former Phillies ace Rick Wise, ex-Twin Steve Braun (a one-time teammate of the late Harmon Killebrew and of new inductee Bert Blyleven), and Syracuse native Steve Grilli.

If you don?t think that the players themselves act like fans at an event like this, just consider what Warden told me at the skills clinic on Saturday morning. According to Warden, who pitched in relief for the 1968 world champion Tigers, baseball players treat these events just like the kids do.

?I collect stuff [memorabilia],? Warden admitted. ?I?ll be getting some autographs this weekend.?

There were a lot of people doing just that over the weekend, and doing so free of charge. If nothing else (and there actually was a lot more that went on, from a free baseball clinic to a question-and-answer session with the Hall of Famers at the museum), the Hall of Fame Classic afforded a wonderful opportunity to get some signatures while talking to some former ballplayers. And who couldn?t love that?

Harmon Killebrew and ?Versatility?

The recent death of Harmon Killebrew prompted many touching reminiscences about a man with seemingly no enemies, despite carrying around the nickname of ?Killer? for most of his life. (He did not really need a nickname; both his first and last names are unique in major league history.) By all accounts, he was a gentle and loving person, who also happened to hit home runs more frequently than anyone of his time. He hit 45 or more round trippers six times in the 1960s, while no other American League batter did it more than once. For baseball fans of a certain age, no player will ever better personify the word ?slugger.?

Another interesting thing about Killebrew, perhaps unique among Hall of Fame players: he was repeatedly shifted between three defensive positions throughout his career, getting 44% of his starts at first base, 33% at third base, and 22% in left field. While many players shift positions along the defensive spectrum as they age, moving from shortstop to third base, or from left field to first base, Killebrew?s managers shifted their star hitter, nearly to the end of his career, depending mainly on the other players on the team. (It would be as if Tony LaRussa started playing Albert Pujols at third base. Oh, wait ?)

Let?s review:

1954-58. Forced to start his big-league career early because of the bonus rule, Killebrew spent parts of five seasons as a little-used infielder for the Washington Senators.

1959. Having traded Eddie Yost, manager Cookie Lavagetto gave Killebrew the third base job. Harmon responded with a league-leading 42 home runs, and started his first All-Star game.

1960. Harmon remained at third until mid-season, when Lavagetto decided he needed to get Reno Bertoia into the lineup (or Julio Becquer out of it) and shifted Killebrew across the diamond to first base.

1961. With the franchise now in Minnesota, Killebrew spent the first half of the 1961 season splitting time between first and third, until Sam Mele became the skipper in mid-season and kept Killebrew at first. (I am not going to recite lots of offensive statistics, so just go ahead and assume that Killebrew hit 45 home runs and batted .260 with a bunch of walks, since he did that every year.)

1962. Just prior to the start of the 1962 season, the Twins acquired Vic Power, a great defensive first baseman, and moved Killebrew to left field for the first time.

1963. Left field.

1964. Left field. Tony Oliva took over in right field in 1964, and Power was discarded early in the season, creating a perfect opportunity to get Killebrew back to first base. Instead Mele shifted Bob Allison and left Killebrew in the outfield.

1965. Killebrew moved to first base (and Allison to left), but Harmon began shifting to third often by mid-season so that the team could play Don Mincher against right-handed pitchers. In early August Killebrew hurt his arm during a collision (while playing first base), but returned in September and played all seven games?at third?in the World Series.

1966. He played all 162 games, moving between third base, first base, and left field depending on who else Mele wanted to play. The Twins also had Cesar Tovar playing all over the field, leaving Mele about seven million possible defensive alignments. Tovar played this role for several years.

1967. Mincher was traded to the Angels, allowing Killebrew to play a full season at first base (160 games) for the first time in his career.

1968. A full-time first baseman again, Killebrew ruptured his hamstring in the All-Star game stretching for a throw on Houston?s AstroTurf (which was blamed at the time for the injury). When he returned in September Rich Reese had taken over at first, so manager Cal Ermer put Harmon (recovering from a severe injury) back at third base to play out the season.

1969. New manager Billy Martin took one look at the 33-year-old slugger coming off major surgery, and decided to return Killebrew to the 3B-1B role, allowing Martin options at the other corner spot. Harmon started all 162 games (96 at third base, 66 at first), drove in 140 runs, and won the MVP award, while the Twins nabbed the inaugural AL West title.

1970. Martin was replaced as skipper by Bill Rigney, who made Reese more of a full-time player. Killebrew started 129 games at third, but still managed 26 back at first.

1971. Killebrew again played both corner spots, though Reese?s poor season (.219) gave Killebrew several long stretches at first, where he started 82 times.

1972. For the first time since 1958 (when he played just nine games in the field), Killebrew played just one defensive position, first base. He was 36 and had slowed down quite a bit, though he could still rake (138 OPS+).

1973-75. With the advent of the designated hitter, the elderly Killebrew seemed to have a ready-made role. Unfortunately, the Twins also had a hobbled Tony Oliva, who needed the role even more. Killebrew eventually made it to DH, but spent his final three seasons fighting injuries and ineffectiveness.

OK, so the question is: how much defensive value did Harmon Killebrew have? According to bWAR, Killebrew?s cumulative defensive value was -7.6 wins, meaning that his place on the field cost his teams nearly 8 games on defense when compared with a replacement level player. Killebrew was a big guy, not fast, and no one ever accused him of being a good glove man. On the other hand, one wonders whether he could have been better on defense had he been allowed to play one position (preferably first base) for 15 years.

More importantly, did Killebrew?s ability to play multiple positions, often day-to-day, provide additional value to his team? In 1969 Martin played Harmon at third base 2/3 of the time so that Rich Reese could play first base. In an otherwise undistinguished career, Reese hit .322 with 18 home runs (good for a 139 OPS+), Killebrew had his best year, and the Twins led the league in runs. According to bWAR, Harmon?s (mostly) third base play cost the team 1.3 games on defense. This might be true, and Harmon?s isolated value might have been better had he just played first base all season and let Frank Quillici or someone play third. In order to get Reese?s bat in the lineup (or Mincher?s, Power?s, or Bertoia?s), Killebrew was asked to play a position he could not play particularly well.

It seems to me that Killebrew?s ?value? to the Twins might have been greater than his statistical record might show.

Another player shifted around the diamond throughout his career was Pete Rose. Unlike Killebrew, Rose did not move day-to-day?he stayed in one place for several years before moving on. Also unlike Killebrew, Rose was an outstanding defensive player for part of his career, before being asked to move again. Rose came up as a second baseman in 1963, then moved to left field (1967), right field (1968), left field (1972), third base (1975), and first base (1979). Let?s examine his move to third base.

Rose won two Gold Gloves in right field, where he had good range though only a fair arm. He was moved to left field in 1972 largely in deference to Cesar Geronimo, a great defensive player with a cannon. In left field, Rose was outstanding. How outstanding? According to the defensive runs metric used on baseball-reference.com, here are the best outfielders in baseball over the years 1972-74, in aggregate.

??Pete Rose 52
?Paul Blair 52
Cesar Geronimo 34?
Bill North 30?
Bobby Bonds 26??

Other than Rose, these are all center fielders. As a hitter, Rose trailed only Willie Stargell, Cesar Cedeno and Reggie Jackson in batting runs among outfielders, making him every bit as valuable as he was famous.

Nonetheless, in May 1975 Sparky Anderson moved Rose to third base. The effect on the Reds was to replace third baseman John Vukovich, hitting .211 with zero home runs, with left fielder George Foster, who would hit .300 with 23 home runs. Rose continued to hit as well as ever, and the team won 108 games and the World Series.

Over the 1975 and 1976 seasons combined, Rose had the sixth highest total of batting runs in the major leagues, but rather than being worth two wins per season on defense (as he had been in left field) he was now worse than replacement level. Meanwhile, George Foster became a star and the Reds won two championships. Anderson could have moved Foster to third base, but he thought Rose could handle it. Given what happened to the Reds, I am forced to conclude that Anderson knew what he was talking about.

So, what am I saying? I am not saying that there should a new statistic to measure flexibility, nor am I suggesting that the WAR values we have become familiar with are wrong, or should be adjusted. I am saying: assessing ?value? is complicated.

Does the Ump Care How Long the Game Is?

During this weekend's Boston-Minnesota series there was another Joe West kerfuffle and the play-by-play guys brought up Joe West's history with Boston. They mentioned West's comments last year that he did not like the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankee style of play, particularly those teams' long games. Setting aside one's own opinion game length and how appropriate it is for an umpire to criticize particular teams, I am sure that umpires — like everyone else — notice when games drag on. But unlike everyone else they are in a unique position to do something about it. So based on West's comments I wondered whether umpires expand the strike zone during long games to speed things along.

To look at this I used the, conveniently time-stamped, pitchf/x data. I collected all pitches made in the sixth through eighth innings and the looked at how long into the game each was made. For example, the average pitch in the sixth inning was made 1 hour and 48 minutes after the start of the game. Then I formed two subsets of these pitches, those in the top 5% of length for their half inning, and those in the bottom 5% of length for their half inning. For example the 'long' group included pitches from the bottom of the eighth inning that were thrown 3 hours and 14 minutes or more after the game started. Pitches from the bottom of the eighth inning were included in the 'short' group if they were thrown before 2 hours and 1 minute since the game started. And similarly for other half innings. The top and bottom of the inning were done separately so that pitches from the top of innings didn't over represent in the 'short' group and bottom of the inning pitches in the 'long' group.

So these pitches come from situations where the game has already gone on for a very long or short time when they were thrown. Now we are interested in how the strike zone was called on these two groups. Unfortunately there might already be a sampling bias in the data. 'Long' games might have umps with smaller strike zones, that being why the game has gone on so long. So a more clever WOWY approach would be preferential, but I couldn't come up with one.

With that limitation in mind let's see how the strike zones of the two groups compared. To first see how the top and bottom of the zone were called I considered taken pitches that were clearly in the zone horizontally ( -0.5 > px < 0.5), and looked at their called strike rate by normalized pitch height.
sper_phieght.png
Effectively no difference. The top and bottom of the zone were called at close to the same spot for both samples of pitches (and very close to sz_bot and sz_top, showing that the stringers do a pretty good job with these values).

Turning to the horizontal zone I similarly looked at pitches that were clearly in the zone vertically (pz in the middle half of the interval between sz_top and sz_bot), and in this case separated by batter handedness.
sper_lhh.png
sper_rhh.png
Again there is almost no difference. And if anything there is a very slight difference on the right edge of the zone (from the umpire's perspective), with the 'long' zone slightly smaller. The opposite effect if the umpire was trying speed the game up. Although the difference is tiny.

So overall, at least by this methodology, there is no difference in how the zone is called in long versus short games. If the umpires are annoyed by having to call a game going into its third hour in the seventh inning they don't seem to let it affect their strike zone. Score one for the boys in blue.

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. ? Roland Hemond has lived his life by the slogan enjoy the moment. He did that Tuesday after the announcement that he is the 2011 winner of the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award.

"I did enjoy the moment today and will relish it for the rest of my life," he said. "I am overwhelmed by what has happened today. When I was told by Jane Forbes Clark that I had won the Buck O'Neil Award it left me speechless and very emotional."

Hemond revolutionized front-office management and strategy during a seven-decade career in baseball, while spending his post-general manager days assisting baseball family members in need. He will receive the Award on July 23 as part of Hall of Fame Weekend in Cooperstown.

"Roland Hemond has touched the lives of so many throughout the baseball family in his 60-year career, always exemplifying the traits that made Buck O'Neil such a revered figure in our sport's history," said Jane Forbes Clark, Chairman of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

The John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an individual for extraordinary efforts to enhance baseball's positive impact on society. It is presented by the Board of the Directors of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum at its discretion, though not more frequently than every three years.

"When you read a description of the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award - character, integrity, dignity, extraordinary efforts and positive impact - you truly are reading a description of Roland Hemond," said Jerry Reinsdorf, chairman of the White Sox and a member of the Hall of Fame's board. "No one in baseball is more deserving of this honor, so it is very appropriate that Roland follows Buck as the second recipient."

The Award was established in 2007 to honor an individual whose efforts broadened the game's appeal and whose character, integrity and dignity is comparable to the late O'Neil, who passed away in 2006 after eight decades of contributions to the game. O'Neil was honored as the first recipient of the Award in 2008.

"I got to know him quite well before his passing," said Hemond. "I was touched by his personality and generous love for people. He was supportive of youth and our game in every way possible and it was his humility that stood out. I revered the opportunity to get to know him. Buck personified being charitable and kind."

Hemond first rose to prominence in the late 1950s as the assistant scouting director for the Milwaukee Braves. Hemond helped assemble a Braves team that won National League pennants in 1957 and 1958, along with the 1957 World Series, while the Braves won at least 83 games per season from 1953 through 1966. He would become a three-time Executive of the Year recipient and helped to build winning franchises in Chicago, Baltimore and Arizona.

Hemond became the scouting director for the Los Angeles Angels in their debut season of 1961, remaining with the franchise until 1970, when he became the Chicago White Sox's general manager. With the Sox, Hemond orchestrated a 31-game improvement over the course of the 1970-72 seasons, winning the Sporting News MLB Executive of the Year award in 1972. Hemond remained the White Sox's general manager through the 1985 season, assembling the team ? led by manager Tony LaRussa ? that won the 1983 American League West title. Hemond won his second Executive of the Year honor in 1983.

Hemond took over as the Baltimore Orioles' general manager in 1988, this time producing a 33-game improvement in just one season. After the 1989 campaign, when the Orioles won 87 games and came within two games of a playoff berth, Hemond was again named the Sporting News MLB Executive of the Year. His work in the Orioles' front office laid the groundwork for the 1996-97 Baltimore teams that advanced to the American League Championship Series.

Hemond served as the Senior Executive Vice President for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 1996-2000, guiding the franchise through its debut season of 1998. Hemond worked as an executive advisor for the White Sox from 2001-07 before returning to the Diamondbacks as a special assistant to the president in 2007, where he continues to serve Diamondbacks leadership.

"From his achievements over 23 years as a general manager, his impact on the game through programs like the Major League Baseball employee pension plan and forward-thinking ideas like the creation of the Arizona Fall League, Roland has left a lasting impression on the game," Reinsdorf continued. "But the award is about even more than lasting accomplishments. It also recognizes and honors the attitude, optimism and positive approach Roland brought to the ballpark each and every day and the wonderful friendships he has maintained within the game and with literally thousands of baseball fans over the years."

Hemond also serves as the president of the Association of Professional Baseball Players of America, which provides financial assistance and college scholarships to current and former players, scouts and others connected with pro baseball. Hemond also helped found the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation, designed to provide assistance to longtime scouts who are in need of special support.

Hemond was named "King of Baseball" in 2001 by Minor League Baseball and also has baseball awards named in his honor by three organizations, recognizing his service to the game: the Chicago White Sox, "Baseball America" and the Society of American Baseball Research.

"I do believe Buck O'Neil was more satisfied helping others succeed," said Hemond. "I'm happy that during my years I've helped some people along the way. How fortunate I've been in my lifetime to be in this great game."
